Description: The programme begins with a reference to the sui generis Japanese humanism, comprising elements of responsibility and pride, and features Kurosawa. Compared to western humanism – hostage to Christianity – whose basic elements are charity and – as much is possible – humility, the difference is vast. Then, it refers to the director’s wish to adapt Vladimir Arseniev’s book about Dersu Uzala, having located financing in the Soviet Union, and the influence of the bare landscape of Siberia, reminding him of the post-war denuding of his country. The film tells the story of a hunter seeking his fortune in the foreign, bare landscape of Siberia, revealing an injured pride with the expectation of an ending or a new beginning –without fear of death.
